Why the name
"Crab Zone"?
I first joined the military in 1991 and started going through EOD school right after basic training. At that time the school was split between Eglin AFB for the first half and Indian Head Naval Ordnance Station (NOS) for the second half. There was a store not far outside the gate of Indian Head which catered to the EOD career field and that’s where everyone bought their EOD products. The store was called The Frag Zone, started by retired Sergeant Major Leon Pappy Kline. It was such a proud, almost right of passage, to finally be able to walk in there and purchase something with an EOD badge on it. No one would dare buy anything with “EOD” or the “Crab” on it before you graduated the school though! Murphy (Murphy's Law) would have his revenge on you if you did...especially if an instructor ever found out! I also remember contacting my gaining unit prior to leaving Indian Head and they gave me an order for stuff I needed to pick up for them from The Frag Zone. That was just our go-to store for anything EOD.
Now that I’m moving forward on this venture, I wanted to bring some of that same familiarity back to the EOD community that our predecessors knew. Since the EOD community refers to our badge as the "Crab" it seemed fitting to name this new store, the Crab Zone.
My intention is to pay tribute to the Frag Zone while breathing new life into our mission and making it a better fit for today’s generation.

That being said, I never worked when I was in the military. But when I retired after 23 years of service, I found myself suddenly faced with the prospect that I might ACTUALLY have to start working!
As many of my friends know, I’ve often talked about opening an EOD-themed paraphernalia and memorabilia store - a place where our EOD community can buy quality, affordable products that represent the mindset and skill of the EOD generations, both past and present. Since I no longer was required to move every couple of years, a muse told me that now is the time to follow my dream. So here I am - continuing to avoid “working” for a living as the proud co-owner of Crab Zone, LLC.
